چکیده

We investigate a set of adaptive±stencil, ®nite-volume schemes used to capture sharp fronts and shocks in a wide range of ®elds. Our objective is to determine the most promising methods available from this set for solving sharp-front advective±dispersive transport problems. Schemes are evaluated for a range of initial conditions, and for Peclet and Courant numbers. Based upon results from this work, we identify the most promising schemes based on eciency and robustness. Ó 2000 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

Predicting flow and transport in highly heterogeneous alluvial aquifers

Successful prediction of groundwater flow and solute transport through highly heterogeneous aquifers has remained elusive due to the limitations of methods to characterize hydraulic conductivity (K) and generate realistic stochastic fields from such data. As a result, many studies have suggested that the classical advective-dispersive equation (ADE) cannot reproduce such transport behavior. Her...

A Fully Multidimensional Positive Definite Advection Transport Algorithm with Small Implicit Diffusion

In numerical modeling of physical phenomena it is often necessary to solve the advective transport equation for positive definite scalar functions. Numerical schemes of secondor higher-order accuracy can produce negative values in the solution due to the dispersive ripples. Lower-order schemes, such as the donor cell or Lax-Friedrichs, or higher-order schemes with zeroth-order diffusion added p...

A total variation diminishing high resolution scheme for nonlinear conservation laws

In this paper we propose a novel high resolution scheme for scalar nonlinear hyperbolic conservation laws. The aim of high resolution schemes is to provide at least second order accuracy in smooth regions and produce sharp solutions near the discontinuities. We prove that the proposed scheme that is derived by utilizing an appropriate flux limiter is nonlinear stable in the sense of total varia...

Absolute Permeability Calculation by Direct Numerical Simulation in Porous Media

Simulating fluid flow at micro level is an ongoing problem. Simplified macroscopic flow models like Darcy’s law is unable to estimate fluid dynamic properties of porous media. The digital sample reconstruction by high resolution X-ray computed tomography scanning and fluid-dynamics simulation, together with the increasing power of super-computers, allow to carry out pore-scale simulations throu...

Accurate Simulation of Contaminant Transport Using High-Order Compact Finite Difference Schemes

Numerical simulation of advective-dispersive contaminant transport is carried out by using high-order compact finite difference schemes combined with second-order MacCormack and fourth-order Runge-Kutta schemes. Both of the two schemes have accuracy of sixth-order in space. A sixth-order MacCormack scheme is proposed for the first time within this study. For the aim of demonstrating efficiency ...
